Phantom der Oper
31 December 2008
Erik lives in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House. A terrible tragedy prevents him living and loving as others although he yearns to do just that. A terrible freak of nature caused him to be born without a face. The rare occasions when he tried to socialize with others ended so dissppointingly that Erik gradually withdrew more and more into his own world in which he murdered anyone that came too close. Erik terrorizes the entire Opera House and has earmarked box number five for his exclusive use. One day Christine Daee joins the chorus. Erik is so intoxicated by her charm and her voice he determines to personally see to her training ...
Gaston Leroux born in 1868 used this story for the basis of his novel "Le Fantom de l’Opera" which led him to everlasting fame. Leroux who had travelled the world whilst working for many years as an ivestigative journalist for the daily paper Le Matin decided in 1907 to become freelance. Long fascinated by the mysteries of death, life threatening situations, transmigration of souls and reincarnation Leroux's novels often deal with romance, phantasmagorical elements and even horror. The Phantom of the Opera musical has also acheived world fame in a variety of versions. The musical-thriller by Karl Heinz Freynik and Ingfried Hoffmann was originally intended for the American market however after studying the score Karl Heinz Stracke decided to produce it for the home market. In cooperation with Jacaranda-Edicoes, Portugal, the musical began its tour of Europe.
